Clays Art Show Event Poster

Midtown’s very own TurnUp Studios hosts yet another unique event for the arts and music community in Jackson. On Friday, April 11, the studio will exhibit new paintings and sculptures by Clay Hardwick as well as host an evening with the documentary film, “subSIPPI.” Live music sets by Loki Antiphony (Tre Pepper) and DJ Spirituals (Tyler Tadlock).

On April 11th, starting at 2pm the doors will open in Clay Hardwick’s new Midtown studio to his first solo show in over three years. Works include abstract paintings and plaster sculptures. This recently completed collection of work explores the organic forms of the unsupposed and dimensional terrains. Paintings range in scale from postcard size, to three feet square, and will be for sale.

At 7pm, the much talked about documentary film, subSIPPI, will screen in the studio for the public. subSIPPI is an honest portrayal of current day Mississippi; it is a search for diversity within a state that has otherwise gone unnoticed. With an emphasis on the moving image, subSIPPI conveys the stark realities as well as the vibrant optimism within the Deep South. Director, Vincent Chaney, will be in attendance for discussion of the film. Runtime: 1 hour.

Bookshelving the film, the musicians who created the majority of the score for subSIPPI will perform music from the film as well as their own projects.

Prior to the film screening, Loki Antiphony (Baton Rouge), will perform music from his new album, “The Antiphony,” as well as music from subSIPPI. Loki and Clay worked together in the past to release a narrative music video, “Lanthanum.” https://vimeo.com/58905368

Finally the evening will close out with the danceable tunes of DJ Spirituals (Jackson).  Spirituals is a project by artist Tyler Tadlock that pursues electronically manipulated sounds, often in the forms of dance music and improvisation.
